Monday's print edition: Magnetto and the 'Alpha Grandma'
Well the city, as I wrote about months ago, pulled the trigger and appointed Tony Magnetto as the new police commissioner last week and the council is sure to confirm at next month’s meeting.
One thing that is bound to happen is overtime will spike. Police Chief John Tedesco was appointed by former Mayor Harry Tutunjian and one of the directives was to bring overtime into check. He was successful and with that success came the ire of the powerful Police Benevolent Association. I don’t care what President Bob Fitzgerald says publicly, it’s a given the support the PBA gave Mayor Lou Rosamilia and some Democrats on the Council was a driving force behind the appointment. This is a favor returned.
Think about it, Tedesco cut overtime by some $1million, coming in $16,000 under the OT budget last year, while the Fire Department spent $1.4 million in overtime last year, $405,000 more than was in the budget. When firefighters are making out better than cops, the cops aren’t happy. Yet, Magnetto is a police commissioner and not a public safety commissioner.
It didn’t help Tedesco’s cause when the city had a violent summer with six murders and a string of arsons and a ton of other crimes like stabbings, beatings, break-ins, robberies and burglaries and this winter has been kind of tough too and winters are usually a quiet time as far as street crime goes. I’m not saying it’s necessarily the chief’s fault but the facts are the facts.
One guy said sarcastically: “Tedesco is soft on crime but tough on overtime.”
As I’ve written, it’s going to be interesting to see how Magnetto and Tedesco work together. The two started on the force around the same time and were even patrol partners at the beginning of their careers.
But, Magnetto was one of three guys up for the chief’s job when Tutunjian picked Tedesco. He didn’t like working under his former partner so he retired. Now the table is turned so we’ll have to see what happens. Tedesco has vowed to stay on and I don’t think he has the type of personality to back down from a fight so we’ll have to see how they can work together or if they can again.
It’s not going to help matters if the city tosses Tedesco out of his office, but I’m pretty sure that’s bound to happen.
“The Alpha Grandma”
Talk about hitting the ground running. Newly elected state Sen. Kathy Marchione already made it onto national television, is mentioned in an statewide Associated Press story and has an online petition protesting the gun control laws that was at one point getting over 1,400 signatures an hour.
That’s not a bad first three weeks in office.
You don’t have to agree with her but you have to respect her. She ran as a Conservative Republican — the central point of her primary against former Republican Sen. Roy McDonald was his vote for same sex marriage — and she is sticking to her beliefs.
Also she has a way about her. A quiet intensity, as one colleague put it, and that intensity came out in the debate at The Sage Colleges in Troy sponsored by this paper where she just shredded McDonald and that performance did nothing but help her win the primary.
That intensity is surprising because it comes from a woman who looks like she just took off the apron and left a kitchen after baking cookies for her grandkids — as one of her staffers affectionately said at the debate: She’s “The Alpha Grandma.”
Gun control
Speaking of the gun control law in this state, the version that was rammed through the Legislature last week by Gov. Andrew Cuomo had a slew of holes in it and one of the flaws makes it illegal for SWAT teams to carry their automatic weapons.
Now that’s pretty funny. It’s an easy fix as are the others but Cuomo got his way. He issued a message of necessity — which means the bill didn’t have to sit on the legislator’s desks for the required three days and actually give everyone a chance to read it — in order to beat President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden to the gun control punch by a day. Biden and Cuomo are two potential Democratic presidential candidates in 2016.
He got national headlines, the chapter amendments the Legislature will now have to take up will make it on the blogs of the Capitol press corps and maybe get a brief in print.
Kind of ironic that one of the reasons Tedesco came under fire by the PBA — one of the many — was about training for the Troy Emergency Response Team and the ammunition they used in addition to the OT they were getting. The ERT is Troy’s version of a SWAT team so I’m wondering if Tedesco, a self-proclaimed Republican, may back up Cuomo’s original bill.
In a move unusual for Talespin, I am actually giving you something worthwhile and informative. There is a ton of uncertainly about the what the new gun control law means so the state is setting up a website and people who are not clear on the specifics can visit nysafeact.com or call 1-855-law-guns, which really means 1-855-529-4867.
Also, it was an impressive pro-Second Amendment rally at the Capitol Saturday with some 2,000 pro-gun rights people in attendance. The mantra: Don’t tread on me. Amen.

He retired because he didn't get the chief's job? Doesn't sound like a team player to me. Sounds like a sore looser. Is he back now to get even? Sure sounds like it. Only in Troy!
Impressive as related to what? The "Alpha Grandma" has supposedly garnered 40k signatures on her "rile the right" website! Yet her cohort in the Assembly was only able to shout out his mis-informed drivel to somewhere around 1500 in front of the capitol on a Saturday. Another example of the old addage..."empty barrels make the most noise"
Does a breath of life from the Conservative Right bother you 5:56?? Glad to see our new Senator comes equipped with a moral compass as standard equipment.
He saved one million dollars? One million dollars? Or brought overtime in under one million dollars?
Yes he did save a lot of money but at what expense, murder, assaults, robberies, arsons, shootings are all up ONLY because he saved money, no cops on the street. Tony retired only because it was the Chief did not take any input from anyone it was his way or no way, even if it was wrong the chiefs ego was sooo big he did it his way. Jim Franco I hope you are right and the new commish gives the Chief the same respect that the Chief gave him when Tony was the Assistant Chief.
Jim...........When are you going to look into the "Desso Affair"? Hiring hacks diectly impacts taxpayers more than voter fraud!!!
Tony Magnetto retired because he saw the direction the department was headed under tedescos rule and he was frustrated he couldnt do anything about it. Now he has the opportunity to right the ship and I believe as do many others that he will be very successful. Commissioner Magnetto will be fair and firm when dealing with the PBA. He will be fair and firm when dealing with tedesco (something tedesco has failed to achieve). To the few tedesco supporters on here and in sound off, brace yourselves. Your comfortable world is about to be disrupted.
Maybe teddy and joe can share an office.
maybe teddy can take crabby joes office
5:56: Do you know how easy it is to garner 40K in an "online" petetion? I think that Manti Te'o's girlfriend signed it.
Verdiles and Testos 2 iconic as well as 2 destination locations in not onlyThe City of Troy but both in district 1 they have both been over run by cars windows be smashed an contents being robbed. This past weekend there where kids running over car tops at Testos. Where is our councilman in district 1? Has anyone seen him? On the street? In his car? Certainly not at church! On 5th ave between 119th and 120th there are 3 count them 3 boarded up houses. 2nd ave is decimated from 112th north. The esteem councilman has only been heard from when he came out to support Jack Coxs who has already loaded his garage on 5th ave and 114th street with junk cars and boats although be denied by the Zoning board. The same Jack Coxs who owns the boarded up building (formerly Toms Used Furniture) on 112th street. There have been more business going out of North Troy under his watch as ever before. Howies jewelry is going to Brunswick next. We need better representatives in Troy and North Troy especially. These cops need to get off there asses and do there jobs not whine about OT or needing a new boss because this one is to tough on us.
The troy fire chiefs are the ones who rocked the overtime...!!!
Lou's off to Obamaland, the council is off in La La Land worrying about cats and compost, and meanwhile back at the ranch -- Rome is burning, and Anarchy is upon us. Where the hell are the cops? Don't blame your slacking on your dislike for the chief. Open your damn eyes and do your jobs, then go drive back to whatever city you now live in.
Now the Police will make millions in overtime due to crime ,,,if we put that money in code enforcement our city would be saved these guys bust there butts off for little money while the police make the big bucks our mayor has told code to relax on inspections ,,,hey Lou these people our committing the crimes ????? There coming to our city from Albany and cohoes because cohoes mayor has code put them out,,,,albany now has 60 %. social services and 40% minorities ,,, Guess were there coming Lou Our social dept,, makes it easy for these people and code was told to relax on inspections by you Lou Great job mayor your 1 st in crime this year broke all city records had no idea my vote for you didn't realize it met more social services to our city
Troy crime rate is higher then Albany. Why is this don't blame minorities Albany has 30% black in population compare to Troy 15% percent so please don't go there,,,how about social services and housing Troy hasn't been aggressive with code enforcement blame that on the mayor who insists on not being aggressive with inspections ,, our kids are not graduating!! ALbany has a higher percentage then our kids in high school diploma,,,Why is this ? Everything comes back to quality of life and it's not good in Troy why? Troy is easy access to social services and welfare and our slumlords get away with having lower standards of housing thanks our mayor telling code to be easy on the landlords it's destroying our city,,, 4 more years of Lou giving our tax money to the police and fireman will bankrupt our city ,,,Lou if you shut down some of these dump properties we can get out of this hole we dug ourself in,,,we have 15 kids living in a 3 unit building that has a total of 9 bedrooms most of them bedrooms don't even qualify to be bedrooms in most city,,cohoes bedrooms must be 10-8 feet w/ closet space do you realize cohoes are shipping there misfits to Troy!!! Because we don't use a tape measure!
DAN STOP HIRING YOUR FRIENDS AND HIRE MORE SECURITY AND STOP SAYING YOU DON'T HAVE NO MONEY IT IS A SAFTY PROBLEM NOW CITY HALL IS STARTING TO TALK ABOUT IT IF YOU WANT TO KEEP YOUR JOB
7:25 - Flush!
6:16 - Flush!
All this is Harry's fault
Peter,Peter,Peter................this is why you took the job! Family and friends getting good jobs! Now it all makes sense. It's very apparent that you and nice guy Lou have no plans on a second term your loading up before the end of this term.
