Talespin: The Turkey Trot and voter fraud UPDATED (Monday's print edition)
Once again I defied the Surgeon General and ran the Troy Turkey Trot — the 5 K — without walking or stopping while still smoking about a pack a day.
I finished in a blistering 36:28, a measly 21:23 behind the guy who won with a time of 15:05, Macky Lloyd of Voorheesville. But, I bet he didn’t stop at the Ale House for a quick pint either — kidding. I didn’t stop or walk and ran the entire thing. To me that’s a win.
One thing that upsets me more than losing to Lloyd, and about 2,000 other people including some who I know are pre-teen little kids, is that Councilman Mark McGrath just blew by me as if I was going the other way.
I picked on the 57-year-old two years ago for doing the same to him and well … fair is fair. He beat me. I won’t tell you what he compared the beating to but safe to say he beat me pretty good, crossing the line at 34:42.
I didn’t see former Councilman Frank LaPosta, who I gave props to last year for pretty much blowing me out of the water. But, according to the results website, the 61-year-old came in at 34:43, a tenth of a second behind McGrath.
I know I’m only 46, not in bad shape and am making too much of running a 5K but hey … I run once a year. I’d rather walk through the woods or ride my bike in those same woods than run through the streets of Troy.
That said, the Turkey Trot is a great Troy tradition, I will run it again next year and I got my sights set on McGrath and LaPosta. Maybe I’ll even quit smoking before then. I think I now have appropriate motivation — those two older guys and being sick of seeing pre-teen kids just blowing by me while talking and laughing as if they were in a sandbox and not plodding along River Street with a smokers’ cough.
Seriously, the Turkey Trot was just fantastic this year. A record number of runners turned out – more than 8,000 - and the usual characters in costume and the families who all get together to run because it’s part of their Thanksgiving tradition and has been for years.
While there was some controversy about who would oversee the race and how much money it cost by taking it out of City Hall I have to tip my hat to George Regan, the race’s executive director, and Mayor Lou Rosamilia for tasking him with the task. I would much rather write that it was $25,000 well spent on a great event than write everything was screwed up.
Next year, I’m hoping to run with my nieces, Alexandra and Madison. And one of them will be wearing my bib just so on paper I beat McGrath and LaPosta — while I hang out at the Ale House.
Na, not really. We don’t need “Trot fraud” to go along with voter fraud.
I was remiss for not mentioning Councilwoman Nina Nichols in the print edition and her seriously blistering time of 26:56 in the Turkey Trot.
I would have been happy to have included her but I just didn’t see her.
If she wasn't going so fast, or if I wasn't going so slow, maybe I would have.
Voter fraud
The second week of Board of Elections Commissioner Ed McDonough kicks off today and last week went pretty much as expected.
A bunch of voters got up on the stand and told the jury that yes, they were defrauded and Councilman Kevin McGrath — no relation to the speedster mentioned above — told the jury he saw McDonough fill in the “excuse” lines on absentee ballot applications during the 2009 battle over the Working Families Party primary.
Now, that’s not necessarily illegal but the only way someone can fill it in is if the reason voters can’t make it to the polls on Primary and/or Election Day is valid, and it has to be filled in with the voters’ consent. Judging from the voter’s testimony last week, neither scenario happened.
And the fraud went further than that just filling out the “excuses.” Four people have already pled guilty to their role in the scam including former City Clerk Bill McInerney and former City Councilman John Brown as well as longtime Democratic Party operatives Tony Renna and Tony DeFiglio, a former employee at the Troy Housing Authority, where much of the fraud took place. McInerney is set to do a stint with the Sheriff’s work order program, and Brown is looking at six months in jail.
Two others are under indictment — former Council President and mayoral candidate Clement Campana and Councilman Gary Galuski.
This is McDonough’s second trial. His first, where he was co-defendant with former Councilman Michael LoPorto, ended in a mistrial. A jury found Michael LoPorto not guilty at his re-trial earlier this year.
When I say the forgery went further than filling in the excuse field I’m not speculating. Actual signatures were forged. One voter who testified said he had his name spelled wrong so that tells me that someone forged it — I do have a knack for the painfully obvious. The voters’ targeted may not have been well-versed in the election process or that well versed in the English language, but I’m pretty confident they know how to spell their own name.
Who did the forgeries? We know McInerney did and he’ll likely admit to as much on the stand. Brown too. Did McDonough have a role? I guess that’s up to the jury to decide.

I give Mark McGrath a great deal of credit for running in a mohair sweater. Go Green!
Nobody did anything Jim. This is Bob Mirch's fault cause all of them seem to have amnesia - so it must be Mirch
Jacky Mac should shut her fingers up during the trial.
Hey Troy peeps just checking in from sunny Florida. I took off for a little vacation and to get away from the flock that I flushed. Fort Lauderdale is nice and warm and the stores here have a great selection of Addiction jeans and Rockawear too. Speaking of addiction there are a lot of places to score pain pills down here so I'm gunna load up. I miss the bros at Bat Shays especially treeman Bob. I also miss driving by twotonengines house 7 times a day. Kevin, even though you are a felon you are aces in my book. You win elections with 73.4 % of the vote over the flock. Ken Z, we disagree but I still love you and miss our nice chats. Don't worry peeps, I'll be back soon and will be sportin' some cool new threads so I can hang out at high school dances and fit right in.
I am suprised no one is being charged with crimes like accessory before the fact, accessory after the fact and conspiracy.
Wow I am in a festive mood also today I just found out that me New Logging Truck in Florida will be delivered in time for a great winter season.
Also Our daughter who is an electrician in the union has gotten her first year pin and passed her test with flying colors.
Franco I will send you an extra carton of Non Filter Lucky Strikes if you go up to two packs a day no problem.
If Caprod smokes Ditto.
The new City Hall does not give me the creeps like the old one did by the way.
Huh well the phone is ringing I must go now.
Thanks for all the cards and letters people.

The delusional bunch has been repeatedly saying that Brown and MacInerney have been lying all along about their involvement. Now the truth is coming out, and Smith will have no where to hide. The prosecution has been tainted, with witnesses and facts missed. Smith is as bad as Brown and MacInerney. Can't wait to here Mac's side of the story. Should be very interesting.

I'm sure glad Kev Mcgrath is reformed, could you imagine how he would have handled all these crimes if he wasn't reformed.
John Brown's testimony regarding McGrath being a ringleader if the conspiracy contradicts McGrath's claim that he didn't realize that what he was doing was illegal. The wall is going to crumble.
With all the good press Mirch is considering a comeback.
Only the 'Gang that Couldn't Shoot Straight' could make Mirch look clean and silky smooth.
@6:13 Like everyone else, I too am allowed freedom of speech, during our many wasteful breaks. The only differnce is I am not hiding behind an alias.
Jackie McDonough
There all shape shifters Jackie !!
I think it is wonderful Jackie Mcdonough is finally speaking out. Unfortunately for whatever reason she, like so many others, have remained silent for three years. The biggest waste of taxpayer dollars has been Rensselaer County paying her husband for the last three years. Everyone now knows what occured and we are not confident any justice will occur.
With regard to using an alias, we may just feel intimidated by your husband and his gang of wiseguys and that is also part of our freedom of speech.
It's sad that the special prosecutor refused to make any effort to insure that the Democratic Chairman, Tom Wade, was not involved in this mess. I'm told not a single question was asked of those testifying with immunity in the grand jury as to whether Wade was kept informed of their activities. Why is that? Perhaps some deal for a future party endorsement for DA for limiting the investigation, protecting the Chair?
And is it true that Wade's hand picked candidate for City Clerk, the convicted McInerny, threw his cell disposable phone away to prevent a record of the calls he made?
Also, is it true the State Police investigators wanted to interview Wade to eliminate him as a suspect only to be told no by the Special Prosecutor?
Maybe the US Attorney in Albany should take a long hard look at this case to be sure that justice is being done to anyone and everyone involved.
Let's face it, McInerny said he did it to get a better job from the Democratic Party. If he wasn't keeping the man with the keys to those jobs in the loop, he was a fool.
All the questions about Wade show why we need new leadership. Rabbit Riley would be an honest leader we could be proud of.
@5:40 pm.... Advised by an attorney to keep quiet. If you knew Ed McD which you obviously do not, he is hardly a wise guy. These guys are not his friends, if you heard Mac's testimony, that friendship ended a long, long time ago. Again, I invite you to sit next to me in court, and you can see Mr. Smith show how personal this is to take Ed Sr.'s son down.
Jackie McDonough
I agree with Jackie. Ed's nothing more than the fall guy for the real crooks, Mac, McGrath, Brown, Renna, Figgy, and all the other rats. Thta McGrath ought to be thrown off the council. As a lifelong Dem, I'm ashamed of these crooks
Smith has been covering up involvement in voter fraud by Wade and McNally by going after everyone else but the guilty. Smith has an agenda that goes beyond finding the truth. When is enough enough?
Rabbit needs to stop breaking Commandments if he is to be a real leader. Does Nina condone his actions?
Like father like son the ole saying goes!
Eddie is getting thrown under the bus by his one-time buddies. They all cut deals and left Ed McD twisting in the wind. Jackie is right.
Just more proof we need Rabbit to get in and clean things up.
Yeah, Rabbit, Campana, McGrath, and all the other morally challenged people you can find to clean things up. Unbelievable!
11:47 you had me till you threw the rabbit in the hat
Not a good day for Ed. His DNA is on the envelope that Renna forged. That a tough one to blame on the others that "threw Ed under the buss". I hard to believe him know.
All in all this really is a nice bunch of fellows. Hard to believe Wade wasn't involved. Wonder why Smith doesn't call Wade or Mcnally.
Jackie got nothing for us tonight? Your break is going to be longer than the breaks in court. O'Malleys next up and I'm sure he is going to be very helpful to Ed considering he's from Hoosick Falls and this all stems from a Troy race, can't figure out what dog was his in this Troy race? We will all find out together. After this is all over please tell us why Ed never took a plea deal.............just tweet us.
Nice to know that Mr Mcdonough sat there and allowed forgeries to take place right in his office. Time for the Feds to take over this investigation......WOW
How the hell is O Malley still employed at the BOE?
Eddie is going to fire him today!
But he'll allow Guluski to work through his upcoming trial even though he was involved with the fraud? The indictment should have been enough to get rid of him
@9:47 Thanks for the reminder to tweet... been a busy week in court, and I am exhausted... So sorry I can not sit on my computer all day long reading anonymous notes... Take a day off from you computer, and come to court. Oh AND tell me why an innocent man should take a plea deal? I'd love to have a coffee and hear your explanation.
Jackie McDonough
Are the taxpayers paying Mr Mcdonough to sit in court?
Prediction Vito & His Brother in Law will be Marooned in a leaper colony
Tray Smith will not listen to reason and get his pound of flesh elsewhere with Mirch!
Jim Gordon will have his foot remain in his mouth for the rest of his natural life.
And the last but not least Harry will Grow a beard move to Grafton after he joins the piece corps to become a Hermit!
Merry Christmas
If I were any of these low lifes, I'd plea bargain for the Sheriff's Work Program, all they do is hang around Stewarts and the McDonald's in Wynantskill.
Rabbit got skinned at the Dem meeting. Weren't you paying attention? Nichols sat with the Wade people, so I guess she does not condone his actions.
3:19 -- but she condones Kevin McGraths actions --both before & after the great reformation?
ROBERT COX
