McGrath is not circulating for Premo

McGrath
Premo
This is going to be a “no, he didn’t beat his wife” post in that I’m reporting something that’s not going on but I think there is enough chatter around town to justify it.

Despite the ongoing rumors – which this town does love to spread – Councilman Kevin McGrath is not, repeat not, carrying petitions for attorney Brian Premo in the latter’s bid to become Rensselaer County Court judge.

When asked, McGrath actually had a belly laugh and said something like it’s amazing how far rumors spread and how far they go. He also blamed Democratic Party Chairman Tom Wade and his “delusional bunch” for starting it.

Wade with no a bunch of affection, coined the crew behind former Mayoral Candidate Clement Campana the “delusional bunch” for thinking Campana could win and has since called for McGrath to step down from the Council for his role in voter fraud and for not telling voters about his federal drug conviction.

While the shot at Wade is just return fire and subjective, the thing he said about rumors spreading is spot-on.

I remember once, someone started a rumor just to see how long it would take to reach this desk and how long it would take for me to call him about the rumor. It took about 15 minutes. And when I did call the source of the rumor I was greeted with a belly laugh. Not that McGrath is the source of this rumor, but it does exemplify how rumors can get ripping around.

There are, of course, come reasons why it would have been a juicy piece of gossip if it were true.

For starters, of course, Premo wasn’t too kind to McGrath while the latter was testifying against Premo’s client, Board of Elections Commissioner Ed McDonough, during the first voter fraud trial. McGrath was forced to admit, under oath, details of the aforementioned federal drug conviction as well as some other unsavory activities related to voter fraud. In addition, McGrath wasn’t too nice to McDonough, and his alleged activities related to voter fraud.

But, in the end, McGrath isn’t carrying petitions for Premo though it would have been a pretty funny story if it were true. Rather than an “only in Troy moment” this one is an “only in Troy rumor.”

He's still allowed to carry petitions after accepting a plea deal for his testimony?

This issue is much more important than the obvious hatred of McGrath posted previously. What is the benefit to the election efforts of Democratic candidates of open war between the chairman and any faction within the party? Chaos! The whose-who of the present Democratic Committee is sorely lacking in leadership abilities. Their cadre of negative posters are eroding their own foundation. Even under the leadership of the nefarious, elder McDonough, there was a functioning organization. Many Committeemen and women did their job, advanced the cause of candidates and did it "in spite" of the shenanigans of the people at "Headquarters". Most of the Town Committees functioned independent of Troy or paid lip service only. Today it appears to be an exercize in herding cats!

What line is Kevin going to run on? This federal convicted felon is not going to get the Dems line I'm sure Tom has someone to run in dist 1. He will never get the rep line. He's going to run on the working family line and that's it. We all know that all his family is on this blog running around to protect him so all you Kevin apologists tell us how this felon is going to win a three way race? I bet you all he goes out a coward just like Eddy did when everyone took the bullet for term limits Eddy was hiding under his bed. Just another flash in the pan McGrath you guys will never be your older brothers.

Is someone paying Franco to keep this story alive? Like Rich Crist, maybe?

This is old news. Yeah, not everyone loves Tom. So what? We don't want to marry him, we want him to lead our party to victory. Which he has - do the names Kristen Gillibrand and Lou Rosamilia ring a bell?

And win again he will do when the Dems kick to the curb empty suit McLaughlin, hopelessly bemused McDonald and Tea Party worshiper Gibson. And forget that lightweight Debbie Young - she is going down in flames, no matter how long her husband and Crist may stalk her competitor.

Give it a rest, boys. When things get as bad with Rensselaer County Democrats as they did in the GOP presidential primary, you might have a story.

Until then - stick a fork in this story...

And this is a perfect example of why nothing gets accomplished (for the most part) in the City of Troy. Political BS getting in the way of moving the city forward so people can enjoy living, working and visiting here. But, nah they'd rather start HS type rumors versus actually hitting upon the real issues. I have worked with people I didn't like before, and I had to bite my tongue and roll with it. Ridiculous!

@9:10pm

Tom Wade was responsible for Kristen Gillibrand? Please tell that to Jay Jacobs and David Paterson. Whys is the good Senator rewarding the County Democrats for their machine efforts by living in the Repubican stronghold of Brunswick? Hmm. That's right, outside of Troy, the dems control squat.

Let's see: 15-4 GOP majority in the legislature
Control of 11 out of 14 towns.
Control of County Executive, Clerk and Sheriff

Yeah, Tom Wade's done really good. BTW 9:10pm, speaking of the good president, "How's that hope and change workin for you?" Mclaughlin, McDonald and Gibson in a walk. Debbie Young will be County Court judge and Kiki Cholakis will be re-elected.

Hey, Rich - Don't county your chickens on Debbie Young, OK? Skeletons and closets.

Hope and Change is fine, thank you. Look at those gas prices! My federal income taxes have gone down, my post-college kid has health insurance despite her per-existing condition and isn't paying more because she has a uterus, Osama Bin Laden is dead, the private sector has been adding jobs, it is illegal to pay a woman less than a man for doing the same job, and the stock market is up.

Not bad considering all the mindless obstructionism by the GOP.

So dream on, Rich. Not everyone is drinking the kool-aid you guys are serving up.

Yes, when you have nothing to do but complain bitterly, I feel sorry for you. Two articles in today's paper where Mayor Rosamilla signs tobacco ban and opened up cooling stations during this heat wave. Who had the forsight to put Rosamilla up for office-- TOM WADE!!! Tom Wade has delivered time and time again for Troy and the small corrupt minority want to just mud sling instead of actually having to work, carry petitions (McGrath) and win elections.

So, baseless rumors are a problem for reporters who cover Troy politics, and the way to deal with that is to have a blog post about a baseless rumor.

Of course, comments under the post provide even more baseless rumors, from anonymous commenters who are probably political operatives of one kind or another.

Sure, it's a problem when people call the paper with tips that are lies.

But the solution is not to print the lies, unless the story/post is about the lying, names the liars, and explains why they are lying.

At the national level and in Troy, protecting sources who lie is a fool's game, because it just encourages future lying and also diminishes readers' trust in newspapers like the New York Times and the Troy Record.

How sad to have a councilman like McGrath. With more trials on the near horizon, more testimony of him committing crimes related to voter fraud. Past doesn't matter, but disclosure should when running for office. The people on here bashing him have some valid complaints. He's a disgrace.

Why write when he hasn't been charged with anything else? Is Kevin just jealous cause he gets all the press? And what's the truth? That he made a mistake in the 70's, paid for it, and learned from his mistakes? And the key number here is one. It's better reading when a judges brother continually screws up and doesn't learn a damn thing -- in my opinion at least.
